Remember way back in 1975 when Mahogany came out and that song Do You Know Where You’re Going To? hit the airwaves?

I do.

I was 9 years old. I still lived in Toronto. I worked in a record store and I was on top of the world. Or, so I thought.

Do you know where you’re goin’ to?
Do you like the things that life is showin’ you
Where are you goin’ to? Do you know?

It was before the darkness. I did like the things that life was showing me. I did.
What are you hopin’ for?
I was surrounded by music and hoping to one day be a writer. I had started early. I was on track.
That was before the war.
Once we were standin’ still in time
Chasing the fantasies that filled our minds
Of course I did this. As a child, it is how we navigate the universe. Filling our minds with the fantasies we still think can one day fill our future as realities.
Now looking back at all we’ve planned
We let so many dreams just slip through our hands
Why must we wait so long before we see
How sad the answers to those questions can be
Sometimes it’s better not to know…to still have the possibility of believing in one-day.
I don’t even know where I’m going to with this blog post!?
Oh yeah. Believing. Reality being different than fantasies and hope. The truth that you can’t always get what you want.
I wish I could still have that time avant la guerre. Alas, as Rene and Georgette Magritte found themselves with their dog apres la guerre…so too am I. After the war…not the writer I one day imagined myself to be.
When you look behind you, there’s no open doors
