With Novelistic Intention…

It’s astounding… time is fleeting… madness takes its toll. But listen closely…

Not for very much longer.

I’ve got to keep control…

The Halloween season is nigh. Being an almost lifelong Frank N. Furter fan, I have a hard time equating how Rocky Horror gets lumped into the Hallowe’en season’s festivities. But I’m okay with it. I guess.

THE LOT (Lower Ossington Theatre) in Toronto is having their annual review of the RHPS. The Rocky Horror Halloween Cabaret. As life is a cabaret, this event doesn’t sound too bad at all! Click on the picture below to get your tickets…but do it fast (like now), because they sell out!

Segue?

You knew it was coming. It was foretold in the title of this post. I just constantly have the Rocky Horror show in my head these days. Thought I would share the good news about the Cabaret. Toronto needs more Rocky.

On to novels. Last week I extended an invitation for book bloggers and lovers to join my street team. I’ve been getting a great response. I’d like to thank those who offered to join and let others know that it’s never too late. (-:

Street Team members will have an opportunity to read BURN BABY BURN BABY before its release. They will be encouraged to help spread the word, host release day events on their blogs, etc.

I’ve been working hard at completing novels that I have had in the works for a while now. Currently, I’m plugging away at THAT’S ME IN THE CORNER, ALIVE & KICKING and THE BOOK OF YOUR DREAMS. All are young adult. All are near completion. A word of advice, if you are a new writer. Do yourself a favour and finish a project before you start a new one. (-:

The Rocky Horror tie in? The life of a novelist, of course. How can it be summed up? As Magenta once said,

It’s so dreamy, oh fantasy free me. So you can’t see me, no, not at all. In another dimension, with voyeuristic intention, well secluded, I see all.

We must see all, yet not be seen. We must not be found on the page, but we must be fully in it. Novelists are SUCH voyeurs.

So today, I move forward with novelistic intention. I am the little engine that could today. I think I can finish these novels. I think I can, I think I can…

Burn Baby – A Young Adult Novel by Kevin Craig

Burn Baby is in the vault. It’s polished and covered and waiting. Release date for my latest young adult novel is December 11th. Before the cover reveal and other events coming down the pike, I thought I would sneak peek it. I mean it IS only 105 days to go before the BURN BABY BOOK BIRTHDAY!!!

Pssst. This is NOT the cover for BURN BABY. You will have to stand by to see that. (-:
Pssst. This is NOT the cover for BURN BABY. You will have to stand by to see that. (-:

I know I asked some of my readers if they would like to help out in the cover reveal, or with excerpts, interviews, what have you. I have a list. If you’re on it, you will be contacted eventually.

For me, this waiting game is the hardest part about being an author. I seem to get SO very far away from my books before they see the bookshelf. Once I’m done with everything, quite often IT’S A WRAP and I am on to the next project and the next project and the next project. Burn Baby has fallen victim to this forward marching momentum, like all the others before it. But it’s also the book I’m most proud of. It was, to my mind, a bit of an underdog. It deals with some touchy issues. I’m so glad it found a home and I really hope it gets a nice reception when that home (CURIOSITY QUILLS) pushes it out into the wide world beyond its front doors.

As mentioned, how about a short excerpt? Because it IS Thursday, after all. (-:

In this extremely short glimpse into Burn Baby the main character, Francis Fripp, is to meet the new girl for a date of sorts. Because of his baggage, he’s convinced she’s not that into him…that he will be stood up. He can’t believe that anyone would like him. Ever. Because of his social status, which is a direct result of the huge amount of scarring he received when his abusive father torched him years earlier, he is a boy of zero confidence. Rachel Higgins? She couldn’t possibly like Francis. Right?

ENJOY…

Since I have nowhere else to go and nothing else to do, I head straight to the band shell. I take a seat in the bleachers facing the stage.

Probably the worst idea I ever had. I’m there in five minutes. This gives me a long time to be alone with the negative thoughts inside my head. I get to sit here and wonder if she plans on ditching me. And if she doesn’t—if she actually intends on coming—what will she wear? How will she smell? Does she always smell the same? Will we kiss? I totally can’t take this kind of pressure.

I know she isn’t coming. I feel like I’ve been here forever. What am I going to tell Trig? That I was set up? That I waited for hours in the park for a bitch who didn’t show up? That he was right?
I can’t take it. I feel like a jittery mess.

“Wouldn’t it be so awesome to star in a performance of Streetcar on this stage?” Rachel says, startling me back to reality. She walks out onto the centre of the band shell stage. Her heels clicking on the wooden stage are intoxicating. Each click holds me rapt. “Ooh. Who would you be? I would so be Blanche. Blanche Dubois is like the best character to build your acting chops on. I played her in grade eight. I was the best washed-up, lush bitch the Riverside Elementary School stage had ever seen!” She hugs herself and twirls. She’s wearing a skirt and I wonder if it was on purpose. The twirl looks perfect.

“How did you get up there?” I say from the front row of the bleachers as I shake myself and straighten up. I jump up and approach the stage. How could I have possibly thought she stood me up?

“Stage left, mah dawlink,” Rachel bellows. “Always stage left.”

She laughs and time stops for me. That’s actually a laugh I could listen to. On repeat.

That’s all for now. Just a taste. Burn Baby was written during one of the 72hr Muskoka Novel Marathon events I participated in.

Announcement: Another YA Novel SOLD! Burn Baby, Burn Baby to be Published

I am beyond thrilled to announce the sale of my 5th novel, Burn Baby, Burn Baby, to Andrew Buckley at Curiosity Quills! Huge thanks and appreciation, once more, to my agent, Stacey Donaghy of DONAGHY LITERARY GROUP! Burn Baby, Burn Baby is a young adult novel. Here’s the Publisher’s Marketplace announcement on the sale:

bbbb

And, once again…a huge thank you to the organizers, volunteers and my fellow writers at the MUSKOKA NOVEL MARATHON! Burn Baby, Burn Baby will be my 4th Muskoka Novel Marathon novel to be published (Sebastian’s Poet, The Reasons, and, Half Dead & Fully Broken were also MNM novels). Burn Baby was written during the 2012 MNM. It’s gotten to the point where I’m not quite sure I can even write a novel without doing it in a marathon setting.

The Muskoka Novel Marathon, for those who do not know, is a novel writing marathon that takes place in Huntsville, Ontario, every July. It’s a 72-hr marathon and there are usually about 30 writers on hand at each one. The writers each write a novel during the course of the weekend marathon. The most important part…it’s a fundraiser for literacy. Every writer in attendance gets sponsorship pledges, just as one would do for any fundraising marathon. All funds go to the YMCA of Simcoe/Muskoka Literary Services. The tagline for the marathon is, WRITERS SUPPORTING READERS. Over the course of the marathon history, there has been close to $100,000.00 raised to help fight illiteracy. That, in itself, is worth it. But the benefit to the writers in attendance is IMMEASURABLE! It’s truly a magical weekend. I would recommend the novel marathon experience to writers everywhere.

This announcement comes on the heels of my announcement for the sale of HALF DEAD AND FULLY BROKEN!
