Connie has a Podcast! THAT’S WHAT WE THINK

My friend (and two-time editor!) Connie di Pietro has a new podcast with her longtime friend Stephen Wilson.

Photo used with the permission of Connie di Pietro.

I have been meaning to listen in on this podcast for a couple of weeks now. Have I ever told you that I have an extremely horrid attention span? It’s true. This is the reason I kept forgetting to tune in. I knew I would enjoy it the moment Connie told me about it, but then…oh, look…squirrel!

Photo to break up the words. This is one of two of Connie’s anthologies that I was fortunate enough to have short stories in! (Allucinor and Purgatorium. Look them up! Great collections!)

Well, this week she got me. She messaged me to let me know she mentioned me in the podcast. It was the reminder I NEEDED. (-;

This week’s episode happens to be about the movies that Connie and Steve love. Turns out, so many of the movies they mentioned are movies I love. Although, I’m in Steve’s corner when it comes to Princess Bride. It just never looked like something I would enjoy. NEVER SEEN IT. I’ve seen numerous clips from it, of course. Especially over the past decade or so. I feel like I’ve seen it because of all the pop-culture references that have been pulled from it. But nope. No interest in seeing it. Most of the other movies mentioned, I absolutely love. I have, though, come to suspect Connie as a person. She has not yet watched the Breakin’ movies. I don’t know what to do with this information. Connie…I have words.

I laughed through their discussion of the drive-in. How they paid for the car-load and 72 people would squeeze into the car. The foot-wells would hold people, the trunk would hold people. I began to wonder if maybe I was in one of the same cars as Connie way back when…because we definitely did the same thing. I’m pretty sure you didn’t actually have to know 20 or 30 of the people in the same car as you. (-; Possibly our paths crossed in the ’80s after all.

I think we saw SOME KIND OF WONDERFUL at the drive-in about 6 times. Movies were slow to change out at our drive-in. And it was a great movie.

Anyway, I REALLY enjoyed this episode and I’ll definitely be tuning in to more. It will be the perfect thing to listen to in the car.

Oh! I almost forgot about the mention. I tuned in because she told me she mentioned me. Connie is SO BRAZEN! Don’t let her charm fool you. She actually admitted on the podcast about the time she stole my coffee cup. The NERVE! If she tries to auction off that cup in a future episode, please don’t bid on it. That cup is the proceeds of crime. She’s sippin’ from ill-gotten gains. I couldn’t believe the on-air admitting of her plundering. Some people!

Shout out for the great discussion on representation near the end of the episode. I felt the hope, and the fear of the current backsliding. Great discussion. We’re definitely NOT THERE when it comes to representation. It looked like we were getting there, but…

Give Connie & Steve a listen. I promise…you’ll enjoy it.

Haunting Stories a Blast AND a Reminder that Writing Community is Essential!

Last night was the “HAUNTING STORIES WITH LOCAL AUTHORS AT TOWN HALL 1873” event at the Port Perry Townhall 1873 Theatre. So much fun!

From left to right: Tobin Elliott, Connie Di Pietro, Kevin Craig, M-E Girard

I really enjoyed reading an excerpt from my latest young adult novel, Book of Dreams. There was a great supportive crowd of listeners there to hear the 5 authors read from their latest novels.

It was also amazing to see my fellow writers. We all realized how much we’ve been missing literary events and each other. Until just prior to the pandemic, the writing community in the area was vital and vibrant. In fact, it was a creative lifeline for a great many writers…myself included. I didn’t realize how much I missed it until I was once again around my people last night.

The other four author/readers, as they appeared last night…

The Author: Tobin Elliott, reading from both Bad Blood and Out for Blood, the first two of his 6-book series.
The Author: Maighread MacKay, reading from Murder at Mother’s, Book 2 of her Lake Scugog Mystery Series.
The Author: Jordan Murray, reading from her novel, I Did it For You.
The Author: Connie Di Pietro, reading from In the Shadow of the Stones, Book 1 of her 3 book series The Shadow Witches in Time.

All of these four readers did tremendous jobs! You could tell by the hushed leaned-forward attitudes of all those in attendance, that they held a captive audience. Such great readings!

In the audience last night was Girl Mans Up author M-E Girard! It was M-E who brought up the need of community that we have been missing since the writing community of Durham Region (WCDR) events slowed down in the pandemic years. We all mourned the loss of our creative community gatherings and opened a discussion for getting back together and reigniting that spark.

M-E has a new book coming out in just a couple of months! On the heels of the highly successful Girl Mans Up, look for their highly anticipated sophomore novel THEN EVERYTHING HAPPENS AT ONCE…coming January 31st, 2023!

All in all, it was a fun night! It was good to be back in the literary lane for a bit! Hopefully we’ll get together for some writing in the future. It would be great to get back to some of that creative energy that came about from being around the WCDR crowd!

(Proceeds from this event went to the theatre’s Reshaping The Future fundraising campaign.)
